Heritage isn’t holding the City back, it’s helping define what comes next

In an article for New London Architecture, Coverdale Barclay Associate Director Kelly Kerruish explores how historic buildings are driving the City of London’s evolution into a more mixed-use, cultural and leisure-led destination.

Using BOXHALL City as a case study, which we were proud to support the launch of earlier this year, Kelly looks at how sensitive restoration and strategic storytelling can turn heritage assets into places people choose to spend time.

The City as a culture and leisure destination is certainly not new. It has long been home to world-famous heritage buildings, iconic cultural institutions and renowned restaurants. But, partners across the Square Mile, such as our clients Culture Mile BID and Nuveen at Devonshire Square, are accelerating the shift by celebrating their heritage environments with uses and experiences for the modern age.

As Kelly argues, when heritage is approached with care and authenticity, it becomes a powerful foundation for identity, footfall and long-term value.
